Birds in the Hanger by Mark Boyle
If you have ever wondered why and how we get lots of birds in the hanger, well its because:

A long time ago a rather large ( None predatory) bird was attracted to the building and thought it would make a nest there. Sadly this birds strong desire to gain access caused the structure to buckle slightly, causing holes and misalignment to the structure. Since that day Pigeons and the like have had a fine time living with other winged creatures without feathers and making their mess.

My name is Mark Boyle I was a crusader 1972-74. Stationed at Akrotiri. At that time I was and still am a Full cat, mg inst, Tuggy, the tug we used then was a Cherokee 140 flight Liner reg. 5B-CBO.
I have attached some picys of the Herc incident, cant remember the date but would guess`72.
The hanger suffered damage to a vertical support which was simply repaired by bolting or welding reinforcement across the bend, probably still there.
The Herc spent about three months at Kingsfield undergoing repair to the nose, port wing and 4 engine changes.

Also attached is a pic of the Oly 401 soaring near Kingsfield, one of only two I believe.
From memory the rest of the fleet then was 2 x T21, Ka13, Swallow, Oly 401 and later a new Blanik and a Falke.

Unmentioned in your Archives is the fact that in High summer we used to position the aircraft and winch on a dried salt lake at Prastio to the North, this was to avoid the sea breeze untill much later in the day, much good soaring was done from there.

the b&w of K13 is me and two hopefuls who must be pushing 40 + now! I believe taken at Akrotiri on a family's day.

The other is the Blanik, not sure of location perhaps you can tell me?

The colour ones are a yellow Oly 2 and the k13.

More as I process.

regards Mark Boyle
