SECTION D
ORDERS FOR THE WINCH OPERATOR

Winch operators will be detailed by the duty instructor. Club members will only operate a winch under the supervision of a qualified operator until they have been authorised by the CFI.

At no time are winches to be driven closer than 50 ft to any parked aircraft not associated with gliding operations. '
Before the commencement of flying the duties of the winch operator are:

a. To see that the winches and associated equipment are serviceable, fully topped up with fuel, oil and water, and that rollers are greased and free running.
b. To ensure that the cable guillotines are in working order (without physically using it).
c. To ensure that the cable repair tools are available on the winch.
d. To arrange with the duty instructor where the winches are to be sited.
e. To arrange with the duty instructor which cable is to be used first.

h. During flying, the duties of the winch operator are:
To act promptly on all signals received from the launching point.
To delay launching if any obstruction or danger to flight is observed.
To cut the cable in the event of a glider failing to release.
To signal to the retrieve driver when it is clear to retrieve the cable(s).
To deal expeditiously with any breakdown in launching arrangements.
To keep unauthorised persons away from the winches.
To check the fuel, oil and water regularly and replenish as necessary.
To carry out a walk round inspection of the winch at frequent intervals to check on any faults that may be developing, particularly in respect of the rollers.
i. Not to leave the winch during his tour of duty unless properly relieved by another qualified operator detailed by the duty instructor, except on instructions from the duty instructor.
j. At the end off flying the winch operator is to make sure that all loose cable is stowed away and that no tools or equipment are left on the airfield. He/she is to return winches to the hangar, after refuelling them, if so directed. Any faults are to be reported to the duty instructor.
k. When work is required to be conducted on the cable the engine is to be stopped.

Safety Note: Give a winch an inch and it will take a foot!

Remember: Winches will bite fools, And fools can break winches!
